Flowers, close-up

Close-up of flower parts. Taken with iPhone + magnifying lens attached to case with superglue. This is a $5 project. The attached lens is a little “microscope” with an LED lamp that I got from Amazon for about $5. It is advertised as a microscope.

Photo taken with iphone + hipstamatic app. Hipstamatic takes square format photos using digitally simulated analog film. Sounds weird, but you can indeed make interesting photographs this way.

I have no connection with Hipstamatic. A friend of mine, a professional photographer, showed me some of the work that he had done with the app — that is how I got hooked.

The Dream

I awoke to a room filled with motion and light. It was as if I were behind a veil, a curtain of white gauze …

The Skylight Project: Smartphone + Microscope

Skylight is a wonderful example of science, engineering, and entrepreneurship. The idea was to design, build, and market a device that can adapt any smartphone to any microscope. Voilà! You have a digital microscope with which you can print and share images and videos. Or use an app to do time lapse photography. This gives doctors in the field in poor countries an inexpensive means of doing telemedicine. It give students and teachers an inexpensive means of doing digital microscopy.

Skylight: a smartphone to microscope adapter

The Skylight team was supported by a Kickstarter grant. I was delighted to open up my email today to find that I will be receiving 5 Skylights — one for me and my son, one for my sister, and the others to loan or give to schools. I plan to have a lot of fun with mine!

There is more information as well as many images at the official skylight website. Besides the extremely cool images, there is this to ponder:

5 TO 1 PROMISE

SkyLights for the world! For every 5 SkyLights purchased, 1 Skylight will be donated for global health or educational purposes. Get more information on our 5 to 1 promise page.

At the bottom of the 5 to 1 promise page you can sign up to be notified when the skylight goes on sale.

zipTimer

Dear Friends,

I’ve posted a little timer app on the App Store which I use for cooking and practicing the piano. Simple, with large, easily readable display. You might find it useful.

Works on iPhone and iPod, but requires iOS 5.

OffCenter Apps

Other, more interesting apps are in the pipeline. Stay tuned!
